Three millennia are revisited, from rock art of the Sahara
& terracotta figures from the "lost" cultures
of Nok & Sokoto (first millennium BC), to bronzes from
the Kingdom of Benin (16th century) & the banners of the

brief introduction to the area concerned: Central, East &
southern Africa, West Africa, and Mediterranean North Africa.
Each of the "icons" chosen is accompanied by a description
of its notable artistic & iconographic features. The result
is an informative survey of African art, shown through a selection
of its outstanding achievements.
